Security Education, Cost, and Financial Aid
In California, in order to be a security guard, a candidate must complete a 40-hour training course. This course is often offered through security guard companies, although you can take it on your own. The course starts out with an 8-hour class which is followed by a test. Once you pass the test, you can apply for your security guard certificate from the state bureau of consumer affairs.
You also have to pass two background checks, one from the FBI and the other from the Department of Justice. Once you have passed all these checks, you will have up to 60 days to finish the rest of your training. Additional courses are needed to carry a firearm, use a baton, stun gun or pepper spray. Information on these requirements can be found here.
The cost for the basic course runs around $150 and the fingerprinting and application adds another $100 to the mix. Most schools expect payment in full for the classes and don’t offer much in the way of loans or subsidies since the costs are so low. For those who need assistance, the state employment office may offer assistance for job retraining if you are out of work. In addition, some nonprofit groups also help their clients afford this type of training.
